Mayor to honour foster mum who has changed the lives of more than 400 children

ARAB NEWS ( Canterbury-Bankstown-AUSTRALIA ) Mayor Bilal El-Hayek will present local foster mum Susan Medhurst, 78, with a Mayoral Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of her extraordinary contribution to the lives of vulnerable children.

For the past 41 years, Ms Medhurst has opened her Bankstown home and heart to those in need, caring for more than 400 children through foster care. Among those children, was a baby who arrived in her care at just one week old.

Today, Ms Medhurst continues her lifelong commitment to fostering, currently caring for three young people, two of which have special needs. Foster caring is a family tradition for Susan, with her two daughters and two sisters also serving as foster carers.

Mayor El-Hayek said Ms Medhurst was passionate about what she did and had many stories to tell.

“She is full of praise for foster carers and selflessly says they are ‘unsung heroes’ who don’t get the recognition they deserve,” Mayor El-Hayek said.

“I am incredibly honoured to present this certificate to Susan and recognise her exceptional dedication, compassion and lifelong commitment to providing safe, loving homes for some of our community’s most vulnerable children.”
